Our journey began from Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. From there, we headed out southwest toward Korgalzhin, and from there south through Barshino to Zhezkazgan. Due to the harsh climate and the abundance of steppe, life in this region was centred around livestock - sheep, cows, and horse. Heading further south to Kyzyl-Orda and Turkistan we gradually saw more home veggie gardens and less horses. Most of the time, and throughout the entire country, we stayed with Kazakh families. And when we did, they were always proud to proclaim: "Ya, Kazakh!"
